The Moscow City Court began a debate on the case of the ex-journalist of Kommersant and Vedomosti, adviser to the head of Roskosmos, Ivan Safronov, who is accused of treason (Article 275 of the Criminal Code).
The prosecution asked for 24 years in a strict regime colony for Safronov. The maximum punishment that it was possible for him to request in connection with the presentation of charges under two episodes of Art. 275 of the Criminal Code, – 25 years in prison.
The process takes place in a closed mode from listeners and the press due to the specifics of the case related to state secrets.
The case is considered by a trio of judges chaired by Dmitry Gordeev. On August 30, the defense challenged the entire composition of the court.
Safronov has been under arrest in the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center for more than two years, he was detained on July 7, 2020. Roscosmos emphasized that he did not have access to state secrets and his case was not related to work in a state corporation.
Safronov pleads not guilty. According to the plot of the accusation, the acts that, according to the investigation, the ex-journalist committed, fall on the period of his work at Kommersant.
The verdict, according to representatives of the defense, will be delivered at one of the following meetings, presumably on September 2 or 5.
