Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban questioned the prospect of starting negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union in the near future. About it reports Associated Press.
Orbán noted that to admit a new country into the bloc, unanimity among the 27 EU member states is required. In the case of Hungary, parliament must give the go-ahead to Ukraine.
“When I am in the House of Representatives, I do not feel an overwhelming desire for the Hungarian parliament to vote for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union within two years. Therefore, I would be careful with these ambitious plans,” Orbán said.
The Hungarian prime minister said the EU needs to “find answers to very long and difficult questions until we get to the point where we can decide whether to start negotiations.” According to him, negotiations with Ukraine are complicated by the fact that the state is fighting: there is no specificity either about the size of its territory or about the population fleeing the country.
“Accepting a country without knowing its parameters would be unprecedented,” Orbán concluded.
September 21 Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine accepted the law on national minorities, according to which it is allowed to use the languages of national minorities in advertising, during various events and when providing assistance, as well as to publish free textbooks for schoolchildren. After this, the Secretary of State of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry for Bilateral Relations Tamas Menczer statedthat this gives the right to national minorities living in Ukraine to study in their native language.
