Golovchenko noted that in the first six months of 2022, Belarus’ exports to unfriendly countries amounted to $3.5 billion (out of $17 billion). “I think that some kind of sobering will happen anyway. Moreover, there are a lot of signals about readiness to work with us. The sanctions that are also being imposed on Russia and Belarus, they rebound on those who do it, ”said the prime minister.
He added that now “Europe is preparing for the hardest winter”, so there may be “certain changes” in the near future.
Relations between Belarus and Western countries deteriorated sharply after the 2020 presidential election, which was won by Alexander Lukashenko. The results of the vote were not recognized by the United States, Great Britain, the European Union and a number of other countries. After that, several Belarusian officials and enterprises fell under the sanctions. In early August, the United States also imposed visa restrictions on 100 representatives of the Belarusian authorities, who, according to Washington, are involved in “undermining democratic institutions” in this country.
After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, Minsk began to be accused of participating in the conflict. However, Belarus denies this information. Nevertheless, due to the support of the Belarusian side of Russia’s policy, a number of individuals and legal entities fell under the sanctions, in particular, the Belinvestbank and Dabrabyt banks.
