The Presidium of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation at a meeting today, December 20, supported the candidacy of deputy and chairman of the State Duma Committee for the Development of the Far East and Arctic Nikolai Kharitonov as a possible presidential candidate from the party. This was reported by RBC with reference to two sources.
According to the agency’s interlocutor, Mr. Kharitonov’s candidacy will be recommended for discussion at the plenum of the Central Committee on December 22. In turn, the plenum will decide who to recommend at the party congress on December 23.
“There were many candidates, different names were mentioned, and the conversation was moved to the plenum. I can’t get ahead of events, it would be incorrect,” said Nikolai Kharitonov. When asked whether his candidacy for the upcoming elections was supported, the deputy said “there was a conversation.”
According to another interlocutor of the agency, at a meeting of the Presidium of the Central Committee, the candidacies of the leader of the Communist Party Gennady Zyuganov, the first deputy chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Yuri Afonin, the governor of the Oryol region Andrei Klychkov, the deputy chairmen of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Dmitry Novikov and Leonid Kalashnikov were discussed.
Nikolai Kharitonov is 75 years old. He already participated in the presidential election in 2004, finishing second with 13.69% of the vote.
On December 13, Vedomosti reported that Nikolai Kharitonov would be declared a candidate for the presidential election from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation. Then he told the newspaper that “there are a lot of conversations going on, everything is being weighed.” On the same day, head of the press service of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation and State Duma deputy Alexander Yushchenko named such messages are insinuating.
