The President of South Ossetia announced the expansion of international support for the republic

The circle of countries supporting South Ossetia is growing, more and more states are building partnership relations with the republic. This was stated by the President of South Ossetia Alan Gagloev during a solemn meeting dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the recognition of the republic’s independence by the Russian Federation.
“The sovereignty of South Ossetia is not subject to revision, and a number of other countries followed the example of Russia, with which we are successfully building relations of friendship and solidarity. <...> The circle of friends of South Ossetia and Abkhazia is expanding more and more, despite the attempts of the collective West to erect barriers in our path,” he said (quote according to TASS).
According to Gagloev, the recognition of the independence of South Ossetia allowed the republic, in coordination with the Russian Federation, to work on promoting international positions, despite the obstruction of Georgia and the West. He noted that the decision to recognize the republic was not easy for Russia. Gagloev added that in this way Moscow sought to ensure the security of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
On the night of August 8, 2008, an armed conflict took place on the territory of South Ossetia. Georgia attacked the capital city of Tskhinvali in order to establish control over the self-proclaimed republic. Dmitry Medvedev, then president of Russia, announced the start of a peacekeeping mission in South Ossetia and the transfer of Russian forces to the conflict zone.
The “operation to force the Georgian authorities to peace” ended on August 12 of the same year. Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili accused Russia of occupying the territories of the republics and announced his withdrawal from the CIS. On August 26, Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Also, the independence of the republics is recognized by Venezuela, Syria, Nicaragua and Nauru. At the same time, Georgia still considers them its territories.
