The President of Latvia urged to isolate Russian-speaking citizens disloyal to the country

The President of Latvia, Egils Levits, announced the need to isolate part of the Russian-speaking society disloyal to the state, informs news portal of radio and television of the republic LSM.lv.

According to the president, both positive and negative phenomena appeared in Latvian society after the start of the special operation in Ukraine. Thus, Levits attributed the fact that most of the republic’s society became more patriotic and began to “better aware of their country and the price of freedom” as a positive. “Daily, you don’t think much about the threat, but now you see it. It makes people think,” he said.

Among the negative factors, the Latvian leader attributed the fact that a “part of Russian society disloyal to the state” appeared in the country. “Our task is to deal with this [частью общества] and isolate her from the rest,” he added.

Moreover, on August 11, the Saeima of Latvia acknowledged Russia as a country that supports terrorism. In addition, according to the Latvian authorities, Russia was involved in the poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in 2018 and the crash of the Boeing MH17 in 2014. In addition, Latvia said that as part of its “illegal” special operation in Ukraine, Russia is pursuing its political goals through violence.

On August 8, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova statedthat Russia admits the possibility of introducing measures in response to the actions of the Latvian security forces, putting pressure on Russian citizens when entering Latvia.

At the end of July, Charge d’Affaires ad interim of Latvia Dacija Rutka was summoned to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who protested against the brutal pressure on Russians when entering the Republic of Latvia. Local authorities require those entering to sign a pre-prepared paper on disagreement with the policy of the Russian Federation and, in case of refusal, prohibit entry.
