A message appeared on the website of the President of Latvia that Egils Levits, together with the Ministry of Justice, had prepared amendments to legislation that should completely separate the Latvian Orthodox Church from the Moscow Patriarchate.
The report says that in accordance with these amendments, the Latvian Orthodox Church is recognized as fully independent and autocephalous.
The amendments have already been submitted to the Latvian Saeima.
Levits called this an important issue for Latvian Orthodox believers, for the entire Latvian society and for national security.
The Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate stated that such a decision could be made exclusively by the mother church, that is, the Moscow Patriarchate. They emphasized that the adoption of such a decision by state authorities is an unconstitutional interference in the internal affairs of the Church.
It should be noted that the Latvian Orthodox Church received the status of self-governing back in the 1990s, which implies that it has a Synod and a Council that elects a primate.
