Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said on Wednesday, November 15, that he supported the government’s proposal to limit crossings of the republic’s land border with Russia.

As the politician stated, he repeatedly discussed the situation with refugees and the flow of other people crossing the Finnish border with the head of the Cabinet and the Minister of Internal Affairs.

Niinistö, he said, came to the conclusion that the time has come to understand “that this will not stop on its own” and that the situation at the border may become more complicated in the future.

Earlier, the head of the Finnish Ministry of Internal Affairs, Mari Rantanen, said that the department could limit the operation of checkpoints on the border with Russia – land borders may be closed. Such proposals are associated with an increase in attempts to cross the border by Russia.

This was preceded by a statement from official Helsinki that the number of refugees arriving on Finnish territory was currently growing. According to the forecasts of the Finnish authorities, in the foreseeable future the indicator will continue to grow.
