The President of Armenia signed the law on ratification of the Rome Statute

Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturian signed a law that approves the ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). About it reported on the website of the head of state.
“On October 13, the President of the Republic of Armenia Vahagn Khachaturian signed a statement on the ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, signed on July 17, 1998, and on the adoption of the statement “On the reverse recognition of the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.” International Criminal Court of the Republic of Armenia” on the basis of Art. 12 part 3 of the Statute of the Law,” the message says.
Armenia signed the Rome Statute in 1998, but has not ratified it. In 2004, the Constitutional Court of the republic recognized the obligations of the treaty as contrary to a number of provisions of the 1995 Constitution. The Government of Armenia appealed to the Constitutional Court with a request to retroactively recognize the jurisdiction of the ICC from May 2021 back in December 2022 – according to the Armenian authorities, this will allow calling on Azerbaijan to “responsibility for war crimes.”
On October 3, 2023, the Armenian Parliament ratified the Rome Statute of the ICC. 60 deputies voted “for”, 20 “against”. The decision to adopt the statute was made by deputies of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s “Civil Contract” party; the opposition boycotted the vote.
Pashinyan said on September 24 that the ratification of the Rome Statute was a consequence of the fact that “the CSTO and the instruments of the Armenian-Russian strategic partnership are not enough to ensure external security.” At the same time, Yerevan tried to assure Moscow that ratification was not directed against its top officials. The decision of the Armenian parliament to ratify the Rome Statute in the Kremlin called incorrect.
