The post of commander of the Central Military District was officially taken by Lieutenant General Andrei Mordvichev. He replaced Colonel General Alexander Lapin in this position. During the SVO, the general commanded the 8th Army, was responsible for the capture of Mariupol and the Azovstal plant, was awarded the Order of Military Merit and the Suvorov medal.
General Lapin twice became the object of criticism from the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov. The leader of the republic accused the military commander of the crisis in the Liman direction and the breakthrough of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the area of the settlements of Terny, Torskoye and Yampolovka.
