The political scientist assessed the prospects for the development of Russian-German relations

“Dead End Seems Inevitable”

Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergei Nechaev said earlier that Germany had crossed a “red line” by starting to supply lethal weapons of its own production to Ukraine. Political scientist Dmitry Zhuravlev is convinced that against this background, discord in relations between countries in the energy sector should be expected.

In conversation with “Evening Moscow” Zhuravlev suggested that Russian-German relations would reach an impasse, since Germany is not independent, that is, it cannot effectively respond to our statements. According to the political scientist, the German Chancellor will not say that the country will stop carrying out such actions, since no one asked him, because this is the American position, which Scholz simply voices.

The expert believes that “the impasse in relations seems to be inevitable.” Zhuravlev would like to be wrong about this, but hope is very weak. However, the political scientist noted that now it is difficult to guess what actions Russia will take in the future, but, most likely, there will be a change in relations in the energy sector.

Nevertheless, according to the specialist, the German government can play on this, because after the warning there must be actions, and if the warnings are made, the diplomats have already determined the next actions, but it is still difficult to predict what they will be.

Zhuravlev added that the German government is waiting for economic sanctions from Russia in order to say that it was not the German authorities that drove their citizens into the cold, but “terrible Russians.” Other sanctions against the Germans, according to the expert, will not be effective, since it makes no sense to convince a person who “closed his ears and eyes.”
