The lower house of the Polish parliament has nominated the former head of the European Council, Donald Tusk, for the post of prime minister of the country.

Earlier, the Sejm passed a vote of no confidence in the government of Mateusz Morawiecki. Tusk must now present his government, until then Morawiecki will continue to serve.

After Tusk’s government is sworn in, he will have to present his program to parliament, after which the Sejm will consider issuing a vote of confidence in the new cabinet. If the parliament fails to determine the candidate of the prime minister during the vote, or the new prime minister later receives a vote of no confidence, the president will entrust the formation of the government to the prime minister of his choice, who will also have to appeal to the Sejm for a vote of confidence. If there is no support from parliament, the president will have to shorten the term of office of legislators, which will be followed by new parliamentary elections.
