The Pacific Fleet confirmed the dismissal of its commander Avakyants

The commander of the Pacific Fleet, Admiral Sergei Avakyants, is on vacation with subsequent transfer to the reserve, the Pacific Fleet reported. Earlier today, April 20, Presidential Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yury Trutnev informedthat Mr. Avakyants was appointed to a new position – the head of the headquarters in charge of the centers for military sports training and patriotic education.
“Admiral Sergey Avakyants is currently on vacation with subsequent transfer to the reserve upon reaching the age limit for service in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (April 6, he turned 65 years old),” the press service of the Pacific Fleet says (TASS quote).
Earlier today, RIA Novosti and TASS sources reported that the commander of the Baltic Fleet, Admiral Viktor Liina, is being considered as the most likely candidate for the post of commander of the Pacific Fleet. His place in the Baltic Fleet could be taken by Vice-Admiral Vladimir Vorobyov, who is now Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, one of the interlocutors of the agencies said.
Sergey Avakyants appointed commander of the Pacific Fleet in May 2012. He was awarded the military rank of admiral on December 13, 2014. At various times, he was awarded the orders “For Naval Merit”, “For Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR” III degree, “For Military Merit” and the medal of the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland” II degree.
