On May 10, a court in Pakistan arrested former Prime Minister Imran Khan for eight days. He is charged with misappropriation of funds from the Al-Qadeer Trust, selling gifts from foreign leaders for $127,700 and embezzling the proceeds. The arrest warrant was issued by the anti-corruption body – NAB. The former prime minister does not admit guilt and speaks of the political nature of the case.
After Khan’s arrest, his supporters attempted to storm a number of military buildings, and also plundered the residence of a high-ranking army general in the city of Lahore. At least five people died as a result of the riots. To suppress the outbreak of riots, the government of the country introduced troops in the capital Islamabad.
