The largest Russian chains of household appliances and electronics stores have refused to sell the game “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III” if it contains scenes calling for violence against Russian citizens. The Russian Association of Distributors and Importers of Video Games was created in May 2023. It includes DNS, diHouse, Buka, EMSI, GamePark, Pyramid, GameBuy, Omegagame and Achivka. The organization’s goals were to support the legal import and sale of video games and provide recommendations on age restrictions.
A preliminary decision to refuse sales of the game “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III” was made after the publication of the teaser. According to Yasha Khaddaj, one of the scenes in the video can be interpreted as a call for violence against Russian citizens.
The antagonist of the game is Russian Vladimir Makarov, in teaser a group of people can be seen supposedly releasing him from prison. At the end of the trailer, a fragment is shown that ended the previous part of “Call of Duty,” where terrorists are preparing to hijack a Russian commercial plane and receive a message on their phone: “No Russian.” Before starting a level in the previous part of “Call of Duty”, a warning was displayed that its content may be offensive to some players and the mission can be skipped.
M.Video-Eldorado confirmed to RBC that they do not plan to sell the game in chain stores. The DNS made the same decision, clarifying that “the likelihood of violence against Russian citizens in this game is extremely high,” which means that its content may fall under Art. 282 of the Criminal Code (incitement of hatred or enmity, as well as humiliation of human dignity).
