The National Police of Ukraine has stopped allowing believers who live in hotels in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra to their places of lodging for the night. About it reported in the Telegram channel of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
“The police refuse to allow pilgrims living in Lavra hotels to enter the monastery. Among the pilgrims there are parents who cannot get to their children in the hotel,” the message says.
The UOC noted that the police offer pilgrims to spend the night in the church of St. Agapit of the Caves, which has “neither equipped beds nor the necessary hygienic conditions.” In addition, believers now do not have the opportunity to gain access to personal belongings that remained on the territory of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.
The conflict between the Ukrainian authorities and the UOC escalated in March 2023. The leadership of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve terminated the agreement with the UOC and ordered its representatives to leave the territory. In response, the clergy filed a lawsuit in court to challenge the termination of the lease. August 9 court acknowledged legal decision to terminate the contract. On August 10, the lawyer of the UOC, Nikita Chekman, said that the court allowed evict pilgrims from the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.
The Orthodox Church in Ukraine is represented by two organizations: the UOC (a self-governing autonomous church within the Moscow Patriarchate) and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), which is schismatic.
