Each Wednesday, The World Africa presents three new musical releases from or inspired by the continent. This week, direction Montpellier, where is held, from Tuesday September 6 to Sunday September 18, the 17e edition ofArabesquesthe most important festival in Europe dedicated to the Arab world.
A significant asset for the second city of Occitania in its race for the title of “European capital of culture” in 2028, as pointed out by Mayor Michaël Delafosse during the presentation of the program at the end of June: “Culture is a plea for a certain idea of our city, our territory, our society, he recalled. Montpellier is European, but it is also an extraordinary space for dialogue between Europe and the Mediterranean. » This is evidenced by the project for a museum of the history of France and Algeria, that the city could accommodate.
Under the gold of the Opéra-Comédie, in the city center, or in the pine forest of the Domaine d’O, further north, this “dialogue” orchestrated by the Uni’Sons association will take different forms: humor, with Djamil Le Schlag, Le Comte de Bouderbala and AZ; cinema, storytelling, dance; but above all the music, with about fifteen concerts and DJ sets.
“This year, we have the greatest oud players coming, rejoices Habib Dechraoui, artistic director of Arabesques. Like the Algerian Salim Fergani [69 ans], grand master of the Constantine maalouf, or the Tunisian Anouar Brahem [64 ans], who has composed many film scores and is signed to the biggest jazz label in the world [ECM]. » Other virtuosos of this lute whose strings serve as hyphens to the Arab world, the Lebanese Marcel Khalifé (72), the Tunisian Dhafer Youssef (54), Moroccan Driss El Maloumi (52) and Palestinian Adnan Joubran (36) will also be present in Montpellier.
But besides these “great international masters”, it is also the succession and “an extremely rich new scene”, according to Habib Dechraoui, which the festival wishes to highlight. Among these artists, the Tunisian duo Yuma or the Algerian Djam, but also the three names that are the subject of this musical selection: Samifati, Labess and Bedouin Burger.

A bewitching violin on elastic infrabasses, all accompanied by mesmerizing visual effects. It is “live” that you have to discover the Nantes duo Samifati, even if their first album, destinations, published in October 2021, already gives an idea of his universe, which is not limited to the Arab world. In fact, with techno rhythms and melodic flights, the two accomplices invite us in this opus to a great journey backwards from the course of the Sun, from the Sunset to the Levant, taking us from Morocco to South Korea in passing through Burkina Faso, Benin, Egypt or Pakistan. Ideal for not seeing the night pass.

“Yemma” by Labess
With four albums since 2007, Nedjim Bouizzoul and his group Labess (“everything is fine”, in Arabic) are not exactly “newbies”. The Algerian guitarist, originally from the popular district Hussein-Dey, in Algiers, however, continues to renew the chaâbi of his elders over the course of his travels and exiles. First in Quebec, where he settled with his mother and sisters at the age of 18. Then on the roads of the world and in particular in Colombia, where the group was impregnated with rumba and cumbia. Released in September 2021, the opus Yemma is a tribute to the singer’s mother, “who fought to carry her children away, towards a more promising future”.

“Dabkeh” by Bedouin Burger
Take a Syrian musician, Lynn Adib, for voice, flute and percussion. Add a Lebanese producer, Zeid Hamdan, ” Pope “ from the underground to the Middle East, for machines and electric guitar. Put it all together between a slice of Arabic folk and another of electro. Decorate with a few sheets of jazz and pop and sprinkle the whole thing with grains of madness. You get Bedouin Burger, a Parisian duo through which the spirit of the desert blows, without limits. For two years, they have been distiling rare singles in dribs and drabs on musical platforms; it is therefore on stage that we will take the full measure of their inventiveness.
