The Ministry of Transport of Russia may return to consideration of a project to create a high-speed highway (HSR) from Moscow to Kazan, said Deputy Head of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation Valentin Ivanov, transmits TASS.
“There is. We are looking. Moscow – St. Petersburg in the first place. The second area of development is Moscow, Vladimir, Kazan,” he answered a question from journalists about plans to expand high-speed railway communication.
In addition, the department is also considering a project for an accelerated railway connection between Moscow, Krasnodar and Adler, Ivanov added.
There are no active high speed lines in Russia. The first project of such a railway was proposed back in 2009: then it was about the construction of a high-speed line from Moscow to Kazan with a possible extension to Yekaterinburg. Since 2013, the project, which was planned to be implemented on the basis of a public-private partnership, has been discussed at various levels, but construction has not yet begun, and since 2019, the Moscow-Kazan project has been officially frozen. In the spring of 2020, Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin explained that this was due to its high cost and “unconfirmed passenger traffic.”
The HSR to St. Petersburg was supposed to be an alternative to the creation of the first high-speed railway in Russia. Due Russian Railways entrances to both capitals and the Kryukovo-Logovezh section were to be financed, while the Logovezh-Obukhovo section was planned to be built at the expense of the concession. But at the end of 2021, a discussion in the government about the feasibility of implementing a capital-intensive project flared up again, and at the end of December, President Vladimir Putin said at a big press conference that the SSR still “requires expert study.” In March of this year, Vedomosti wrote about the government’s intention to refuse to finance the project from the NWF.
