Car building enterprises in Russia have adapted to the current sanctions restrictions. This is stated in the response of the press service of the Ministry of Industry and Trade to the request of Vedomosti.

“The current situation in the freight car building industry is quite stable. Domestic enterprises have adapted to the current sanctions restrictions, a rhythmic production of freight cars, including innovative ones, has been established,” the ministry said.

Earlier in the review STLC reported a significant decrease in the production of freight cars in January-March, which dipped by 16% compared to the same period in 2022 to almost 13,000 cars. At the same time, the production of innovative railcars (with an increased load of 25 tons per axle) decreased by 51% to just over 3,000 units.

To date, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the capacities of Russian car-building plants allow the production of about 80,000 units of freight rolling stock annually. “Accordingly, the demand on the market can be satisfied through domestic production,” the Ministry of Industry and Trade emphasizes.

They also recalled that for domestic enterprises of railway engineering “there is a set of state support measures, including programs of the Industrial Development Fund, a cluster investment platform, as well as R&D subsidies.”

The negative trend in the production of railcars, according to the Association of Carriage Builders, is slowing down: the decline in railcar production for four months amounted to 8%. In total, 18,000 wagons were produced from January to April, including 4,700 innovative ones (-41% compared to January-April 2022), follows from the merger data.

At the same time, according to the EBC estimates, the decommissioning of wagons this year will reach 30,000–32,000 units (+25–30% by 2022). At the end of the year, against the backdrop of a growth in the freight base and high retirement volumes, STLC expects an increase in demand for freight rolling stock by almost 10% compared to 2022, to 55,000 units.
