During the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, depleted uranium shells were also used, which Britain is now promising Ukraine. This subsequently led to an increase in infertility and cancer among local residents, said Serbian Health Minister Danica Grujicic.
“The use of depleted uranium has not only led to an increase in oncological diseases, we note a significant increase in male infertility, autoimmune diseases of all kinds, pathologies during pregnancy, certain mental disorders in children,” the minister said on Serbian radio and television.
She stressed that this was a “disgusting and inhuman experiment” on the entire Balkan region. Grujicic expressed her hope that the international scientific community will understand the need to ban such weapons.
The plans to transfer shells with depleted uranium to Ukraine were previously announced by the Deputy Minister of Defense of Great Britain Annabelle Goldie. Russian Ambassador to the UK Andrey Kelin said yesterday that London is unlikely to abandon this idea. He added that such shells are used in the Challenger and Leopard tanks.
