A breakthrough at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station and large-scale flooding were recognized as a federal emergency. Statement published on the website of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
“Relate the situation that has developed on the territory of the Kherson region to an emergency of a federal nature and establish a federal level of response,” Kurenkov said.
According to an operational assessment, the damage from emergencies in the Kherson region exceeded 1.2 billion. This became the basis for the federal level of response, the department stressed.
On June 5–6, 2023, as a result of explosions at the hydroelectric power station, 11 out of 28 spans of the station were destroyed. Water from the Kakhovka reservoir began to uncontrollably discharge downstream of the Dnieper and flooded the station.
Flooding affected 35 settlements of the Kherson region. After the destruction of the Kakhovskaya HPP, the level of water rise reached about 11 m.
