“Kommersant Style” talks about the new repertoire of online cinemas. Among them are adaptations of spy classics, science fiction writer William Gibson and the star of modern feminist prose.
“Peripherals”
The father of cyberpunk, William Gibson, has been working with television and film for a long time. He wrote scripts for The X-Files (and even played episodic roles there), Robert Longo directed the great Johnny Mnemonic based on it, and the director of the new series, Vincenzo Natali, one of the most interesting modern directors who shoots criminally little, wanted to film it since the beginning of the noughties. It didn’t work out with a feature film, but Amazon gave him carte blanche for Peripherals, a film adaptation of Gibson’s not-so-famous novel about a girl who tests computer games, finds a way to get inside them and ceases to distinguish them from the real world (the plot partially resembles “ Ready Player One by Steven Spielberg. Starring Chloe Grace Moretz, the showrunners responsible for the dark tone and complex composition are the creators of Westworld, the vicissitudes of which the audience has been trying to figure out since 2016.
“A Spy Among Friends”
A film adaptation of the classic spy novel by The Times historian and columnist Ben McIntyre about Kim Philby, one of the leaders of British intelligence who began working for the Soviet Union in 1933 (he was buried, by the way, at the Kuntsevo cemetery). The story of one of the most famous double agents in history, McIntyre wrote on archival materials closed to the general public, so you should not be afraid of over-dramatizing the story. The miniseries centers on Philby’s relationship with one of his closest friends and colleagues, Nicholas Elliot, an MI6 agent Philby lies to on a daily basis. Philby is played by Guy Pearce, Elliot is played by Damian Lewis, who resembles a cross between his two main characters: Soames from The Forsyte Saga and Nicholas Brody from Homeland.
“Fleischman in Trouble”
Screen adaptation of the bestselling book by Taffy Brodesser-Akner, one of America’s most notable lifestyle journalists. A New York hepatologist is having a difficult divorce from his wife, who at some point disappears, leaving two children in his care. Then he tries to find her, and at the same time understand when something went wrong in his life. The novel, which Brodesser-Akner herself adapted for the television screen, was compared by critics to Updike and Roth for its rather ruthless portrayal of the suffering of a “middle-aged white man.” And the writer herself joked that “the only way for people to listen to the story of a woman is to tell her through the story of a man.” For the film adaptation, Hulu assembled an impressive company. Starring Jesse Eisenberg, who, like no one else, succeeds in the role of unpleasant neurotics, Claire Danes plays the missing wife, in the background are Lizzy Caplan and Adam Brody. Material that in other years traditionally got to Woody Allen or David Fincher is being filmed by the authors of Little Miss Sunshine Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, so we can safely assume that the tone of the production will most likely be sympathetic.
