WP: Zaluzhny made it clear to Zelensky that there will be no quick improvement on the battlefield
The Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian troops, Valeriy Zaluzhny, discussed his resignation with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. According to The Washington Post citing a source in the Ukrainian government, the conversation took place on January 29. Zelensky explained that citizens are already tired of the conflict, and aid from allies has slowed down, so such a measure could help refresh the situation.
The source claims that Zaluzhny reacted calmly to his dismissal. He expressed his concerns about the problems his successor will inherit and made it clear that a quick improvement in Ukraine’s position on the battlefield is unlikely. However, the Ukrainian leader listened carefully to his interlocutor.
Earlier, some politicians and journalists wrote about Zaluzhny’s resignation, and it was proposed that his post would be taken by the current head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Kirill Budanov, but he refused. Following him, a similar proposal was rejected by the commander of the ground forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Colonel General Alexander Syrsky.
