The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, gave an interview to Spiegel, in which he criticized the foreign policy initiatives of the head of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen; the EC reacted to his words with irritation. About it writes Spiegel.
In an interview with the publication, Michel accused von der Leyen of exceeding his powers, citing as an example the migration agreement with Tunisia. According to him, the head of the EC signed it together with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Italian Giorgia Meloni, but the EU Council “stayed away” from the decision. EC spokeswoman Arianna Podesta called Michel’s words “partly false.”
As Spiegel notes, while accusing von der Leyen of exceeding her powers, Michel does the same when speaks about the prospect of Ukraine joining the EU by 2030. These words also caused irritation in the EC, the newspaper writes. Spiegel called the conflict between the head of the European Council and the head of the EC “a bizarre struggle for power.”
During the press conference, Podesta noted that the statements of the head of the European Council on the distribution of roles within the EU are “partly inaccurate.” In the interview, Michel argued that the European Council makes “a decision on the strategic direction”, and the EC, in turn, takes care of its implementation.
In June von der Leyen stated in an interview with El Mundo that the EC cannot name the exact date of Ukraine’s accession to the EU, however, according to her, the existence of the EU without Ukraine in its composition “would be unthinkable” in 20 or 30 years.
Kyiv submitted documents to join the EU at the end of February 2022. Four months later, the country officially became a candidate for membership in the community. EU authorities have repeatedly pointed out the need to carry out a number of reforms and take measures to combat corruption in Ukraine in order for the country to join the community.
