A formal decision to extend the powers of Stoltenberg may be made in the coming days. At the same time, Brussels expects Stoltenberg to confirm his intention to remain in office on the eve of the NATO summit in Vilnius, which is scheduled for July 11 and 12. According to the Verdens Gang, the most likely scenario would be to extend Stoltenberg’s term until the summer of 2024.

According to the newspaper, on June 27, Stoltenberg confirmed his position, which he had voiced earlier, that he did not plan to remain NATO Secretary General after the autumn.

Formerly Euractiv portal wrotethat the decision to extend Stoltenberg’s term could be made on June 28. Such a decision will allow NATO to focus on supporting Ukraine, the sources of the portal noted. NATO diplomats also pointed to the ability of Stoltenberg, who has been in charge of the organization since 2014, to manage the military alliance during crises. Reuters and Bloomberg also wrote that Stoltenberg could be asked to stay in office for another year, as he continues to enjoy “broad support” in the alliance.
