Turkey, following Denmark and Saudi Arabia, intends to hold the third international meeting on a peaceful settlement in Ukraine. About it writes Bloomberg, citing sources.
According to the agency’s interlocutors, the meeting in Istanbul is scheduled for the end of October. Participants will discuss ideas for achieving lasting peace in Ukraine. In particular, the agenda will include the peace summit that Kyiv plans to hold this year and the “peace formula” of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
US officials are expected to attend the meeting, but the White House has not yet decided who will go to Istanbul, Bloomberg notes. The US presidential administration declined to comment.
According to the agency, Russia was not invited to the negotiations. At the same time, the allies would like to see China among the participants, but it is unknown whether a Chinese representative will attend the meeting, sources familiar with the situation told Bloomberg.
Negotiations in Istanbul could become the third international meeting on the issue of achieving peace in Ukraine. The first took place in Denmark in June, and the second in Saudi Arabia in August.
Russia was not invited to both events. The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, stated that negotiations on Ukraine without Russia are “absurd” and “nonsense.” In the Kremlin promised monitor their results. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov noted that any attempts to promote a peaceful settlement “worthy of a positive assessment.”
In February and March 2022, Russia and Ukraine held several rounds of negotiations. Three meetings took place in Belarus, the fourth in Istanbul. After this, Kyiv pulled out of the negotiations and the process was frozen. On October 4, 2022, Zelensky signed a decree refusing to negotiate with Russia while Vladimir Putin is its president. After this, the Kremlin repeatedly declared its readiness for negotiations, but pointed out the impossibility of holding them because of this document.
