According to the newspaper, Ukrainian operatives installed a secret compartment in a pet carrier in which explosive components were hidden. The carrier was in the car of Ukrainian Natalya Vovk, which also included her mother and 12-year-old daughter. The purpose of the operation was to kill Dugina’s father, political scientist Alexander Dugin, sources say.
Dugina’s murder is part of a “shadow war” operation involving elite teams of Ukrainian operatives who were trained in partnership with the CIA. According to the newspaper, since 2015, the CIA has spent tens of millions of dollars to turn Ukrainian intelligence agencies into powerful allies against Moscow. The article states that the US agency was not directly involved in the operations.
The Washington Post writes that over the past 20 months, the SBU and the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of Ukraine have committed “dozens of murders of Russian officials,” military personnel and supporters of the special operation in Russian-controlled territories. At the same time, the CIA and Washington are concerned about Kyiv’s desire for lethal operations.
Dugina died in August 2022. Her father’s SUV, in which she was, exploded and caught fire on Mozhaiskoye Highway in the Odintsovo district of the Moscow region. On August 22, the Russian FSB announced that it had solved the murder, saying that Ukrainian special services were behind it. According to the department, Vovk was involved in the crime; after committing the murder, she left through the Pskov region to Estonia. On November 2, a court in Moscow arrested Vovk in absentia.
The head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine, Kirill Budanov, answering a question about Kiev’s involvement in the murder of Dugina, said that Ukraine “has killed and will continue to kill Russians anywhere in the world until the country’s complete victory.”
