Israel and Egypt have agreed to open the Rafah checkpoint in the Gaza Strip so that US citizens can leave the territory, AFP reports, citing an American official.
According to Reuters, Egypt also arrived two flights with humanitarian aid. The cargo is being stored there until safe passage can be secured for its delivery to the Gaza Strip, a Red Crescent spokesman said. According to the Egyptian side, the Rafah crossing, which connects Sinai with the Gaza Strip, remains open on its side, although traffic was stopped for several days due to Israeli bombing. Reports that the crossing was closed due to work to strengthen security at the border are incorrect, the agency reports, citing a source in the Egyptian security services. At the same time, a representative of the Israeli military said that the border remains closed and any crossing into Egypt must be coordinated with Israel.
The Rafah checkpoint is the main exit point for the 2.3 million residents of the Gaza Strip, which is not controlled by Israel, Reuters notes. According to the agency, the United States agreed with Egypt and Israel to open the checkpoint from 12:00 to 17:00 local time (the same as Moscow).
Reuters previously wrote that Egypt, in negotiations with the United States, Qatar and Turkey, discussed the idea of delivering humanitarian aid across the border with the Gaza Strip – the Rafah checkpoint, which remains closed after the Israeli army carried out several strikes on the Palestinian part of the border crossing on October 10.
