Germany, together with partners from Italy, Sweden and Spain, plans to develop a new battle tank that will be the “successor to the Leopard 2”, writes Handelsblatt citing sources.

The new tank should be developed under the leadership of the German engineering company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and the concern for the production of military equipment Rheinmetall.

“The parties signed the relevant contracts a few days ago, and now the partners want to jointly apply for funding from the European Defense Fund (EDF). We are talking about a three-digit millionth sum, ”the newspaper writes.

It is noted that Germany has already concluded a similar cooperation agreement with France. In 2017, the governments agreed on the project of the tank of the Main Ground Combat System (MGCS, the main ground combat system). According to plans, it should replace “by the middle of the next decade” the Leopard 2 tanks and the French Leclerc. However, as wrote September 5 Handelsblatt edition, “development of the Franco-German battle tank of the future is in danger of failure” due to disagreements between the two countries.
