Serbs living in the north of Kosovo began to use the symbol Z, protesting against the actions of the NATO contingent in the region, RIA Novosti reports citing The Guardian newspaper.
The Z symbol is used by the Russian Armed Forces as part of a special military operation in Ukraine.
According to The Guardian, the Serbs put Z symbols on cars belonging to the NATO contingent.
Protests in northern Kosovo began over demands from local Serbs to recall the Kosovo Albanian mayors elected on April 23 during a Serb majority boycott. Thousands of Serbs take part in the protests.
As reported, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić brought the Serbian army to a state of maximum combat readiness due to the situation in Kosovo and Metohija. The head of state also demanded that NATO “urgently stop the violence against the Serbs” in Kosovo and Metohija.
Later, the US administration urged Serbia to withdraw its troops from the border with Kosovo, as well as lower their level of readiness. US Deputy National Security Adviser John Finer said the White House was “concerned” about the situation in northern Kosovo. According to him, Washington calls on each of the parties to work on de-escalating the situation. In addition, Finer said that Washington expects the parties to resume dialogue, as well as the implementation of agreements on the normalization of relations that were reached earlier.
