At the age of 63, the mayor of the city of Sayansk, Oleg Borovsky, died, said the governor of the Irkutsk region, Igor Kobzev. He did not name the cause of death, but clarified that Mr. Borovsky died today, February 27.
“Tragic news – our colleague, the mayor of Sayansk Oleg Valerievich Borovsky, died suddenly. This is a huge loss not only for Sayansk, but for the entire region,” Mr. Kobzev wrote in Telegram.
Oleg Borovsky held the post for almost 10 years. He was first elected mayor of Sayansk in September 2014. In 2019, he was re-elected to office, receiving 82.95% of the vote.
In August 2023, the mayor of Sayansk refused from participating in the elections to the Legislative Assembly of the Angara region, having criticized the head of the regional government. Among the reasons that influenced his decision, Mr. Borovsky named the unfair policy of distributing funds from the regional budget between the cities of the Angara region. For the latter, he accused the chairman of the regional government, Konstantin Zaitsev, who occupied second place in the regional party list of United Russia after Igor Kobzev.
