The mayor of Nova Kakhovka announced the destruction of the upper part of the hydroelectric power station after shelling

The upper part of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station was destroyed as a result of shelling, the reservoir dam was not damaged. About this in a conversation with RIA Novosti informed administration of the Novokakhovsk city district Vladimir Leontiev.

“There were several hits at two in the morning in the upper part of the hydroelectric power station, where there are shandors (beams designed to block the culvert – ed.), where the valves are located directly, and it was demolished. The dam has not been destroyed, and this is a great happiness,” he said.

According to Leontiev, as a result of the incident, the water level after the destruction of the hydroelectric power station rose by 2.5 m downstream. Due to the discharge of water, about 300 houses in the settlements of Dnepryany and Korsunka near Nova Kakhovka may be in the flood zone, added Leontiev. He admitted that their inhabitants would need to be evacuated. “Now we will understand, we have removed the buses from the routes, we will be ready, if necessary, to take people out, evacuate them. But there will be no catastrophe,” he said.

On the night of June 6, Ukrainian Telegram channels began to spread information about the complete destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. Originally Leontiev refuted this information and called it nonsense, emphasizing that everything is calm in the city.

Later, a member of the main council of the administration of the Zaporozhye region, chairman of the movement “We are together with Russia” Vladimir Rogov informedthat the destruction does not pose a critical danger to the Zaporizhzhya NPP, although in the medium and long term this may lead to NPP safety problems and “proper provision of the necessary volumes of the plant.”

Formerly Rogov informed that the water level in the Kakhovka reservoir has already reached a critical level, after the winter the water rose by 17 m. According to him, this was caused by uncontrolled discharge of water from HPPs, which are under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine upstream, and floods.

At the beginning of May Rogov warned about the attempts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to flood the left-bank part of the Zaporozhye region in order to force the Dnieper and capture the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
