The mayor of Moscow and the head of the Ministry of Education and Science received the “Lawyer of the Year” award – Kommersant

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin received the “Lawyer of the Year” award on December 2 in the special category “For the protection of social and labor rights of citizens.” The award, established by decree of the President of the Russian Federation in 2009 and awarded by the Russian Lawyers Association (RLA), was presented to the mayor by the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, head of the Board of Trustees of the ALA Dmitry Medvedev.

Mr. Sobyanin, who has a PhD in Law, noted in his speech that he is engaged in “seemingly economic work.” “But any of your movements, any of your decisions must comply with the rules of law. And, of course, a legal specialty is also useful here,” the mayor said.

Mr. Medvedev, in turn, recalled that in the 1990s, when Sergei Sobyanin headed the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and Judicial and Legal Issues, work in the legal field was extremely difficult, because the legal foundation of the new state was being created. “Sergei Semenovich was also modest, he now has chores to do. You and I understand what Moscow is – it is more than most European states of average, so to speak, lousy, as they say,” added the deputy chairman of the Security Council.

In the “Legal Education” category, the award was received by the Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov, who especially thanked the Law Firm “for support in the development of legal education and legal science, as well as the sphere of research and development for the Russian higher education system.”

Other laureates in 2023 include government plenipotentiary representative in the State Duma Alexander Sinenko (nomination “Development of Legislation”), Rector of Yaroslavl State University Artem Ivanchin (“Legal Education and Upbringing”), Head of the Department of Civil Procedure of the Ural State Law University Vladimir Yarkov (“Human Rights Activities”) and Head of the Department of Philosophy of Law, History and Theory of State and Law of the Institute of State and Law of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Gorban (“For his contribution to legal science”). Also as part of the ceremony, the presentation of the O. E. Kutafin medal “For Merit in Jurisprudence” took place, which was received by Deputy Minister of Justice of the Russian Federation Elena Ardabyeva and Director of the Institute of Legislation and Comparative Law under the Government of the Russian Federation Talia Khabrieva.
