The mayor of Berdyansk announced a referendum on the status of the region in September

A referendum on the status of Berdyansk and the Zaporizhia region will be held in September, said Mayor Oleksandr Saulenko. The politician did not name the exact date.

“The referendum will naturally take place on our territory. We are preparing for this referendum, it is planned for September, I can’t say the exact date yet, ”he said (quote by RIA Novosti).

On February 24, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, the goals of which were declared to be denazification, demilitarization of the country and the liberation of the LPR and DPR. On July 3, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to President Vladimir Putin about entering the administrative borders of the LPR.

On August 10, the head of the DPR, Denis Pushilin, said that the Russian Armed Forces, together with units of the people’s militia of the DPR and the LPR forces, had liberated about half of the entire territory of the republic.

In August, the head of the pro-Russian Supreme State Administration of the Zaporozhye region, Evgeny Balitsky signed order to hold a referendum on the accession of the region to Russia. The accession document was signed within the framework of the “We are together with Russia” movement, which took place in Melitopol.

The government of the Zaporozhye region has repeatedly stated its desire to join Russia after the complete liberation by Russian troops. In the Kremlin declaredthat the inhabitants of all the liberated regions, including the DPR and LPR, must make their own decisions about their future. At the same time, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said in an interview with The Times in mid-July that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered return the coastal territories that are under the control of the RF Armed Forces.
