One turbine of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station in the Kherson region has been turned off after rocket attacks by the Ukrainian armed forces, Arseniy Zelensky, deputy director of the hydroelectric power plant for reconstruction, said. In his opinion, in the event of problems with the hydroelectric dam at the Zaporizhzhya NPP, there will be “big troubles”, which can lead to the development of a nuclear catastrophe.
“We have been working in emergency mode since the first days of hostilities, this is an emergency situation. The station’s own needs, backup 6 kV, are lost, we are working in a very dangerous mode, ”- said Zelensky (TASS quote).
One of the station’s turbines was turned off after rocket attacks by the Ukrainian military, he said. Three hydroelectric units are currently operating, and before hitting the northern end, there were four hydroelectric units.
“But due to the fact that there was a danger of an oil spill as a result of falling and scattering of fragments, the sixth hydroelectric unit was decommissioned to ensure the safety of the station,” said the deputy director of the hydroelectric power plant for reconstruction.
According to Zelensky, now the hydroelectric power station generates about 115 MW of electricity.
