The main requirement for starting filming a film with David Lynch turned out to be a bag of cheese balls.

“I eat them whenever possible.”

David Lynch agreed to play a small role in Steven Spielberg’s award-winning film The Fabelmans, as long as he always had a bag of cheese balls on set.

In an interview with Empire, David Lynch was asked about the situation that led to him accepting the role in The Fabelmans, which was released in 2022 and received Golden Globe nominations. In the film, the director plays none other than legendary director John Ford. And for many, this is the highlight of the film. But why would Lynch agree to star in the film when he usually says no to these types of roles? Would you believe it was for some Cheetos? The director of films like Dune, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive noted that he was initially hesitant about casting fellow legendary director John Ford in Spielberg’s film.

“At first I didn’t want to do it. And the reason is that when it comes to acting, I’ve deliberately tried to stay away from it, giving the likes of Harrison Ford and George Clooney a chance at their careers,” Lynch tells the publication.

So, when asked what his main requirement was to accept the role in Fabelmans, Lynch stated the following conditions: “Well, first of all, Cheetos, I love them. And whenever possible I buy them. But I know that this is not exactly healthy food. So when I go out and I get the opportunity… But to be honest, I don’t get them that often. If I get them, I want a big bag. Because once you start…you have to eat a lot before you can slow down and really stop. Otherwise, with a small bag, you would have to wander around for days to find more.”

It was previously claimed that Steven Spielberg turned to Laura Dern to convince David Lynch to agree to an important cameo role.

David Lynch is a director who has influenced generations of filmmakers and screenwriters. He decided to star in The Fabelmans because he “really liked the scene” that appears in the last five minutes of the film. Young Spielberg meets Ford, who gives him filmmaking advice.

“John Ford probably had a lot of things he could have turned to to give this young guy an early education. But he chose the horizon,” Lynch added. “But it’s true.” The horizon in the middle is boring as hell.”
