The magazine of the Ministry of Defense published an article on the development of a new type of military operations

Russia is actively developing a new type of military operations, including the use of offensive nuclear weapons to protect against US aggression. This is stated in article Deputy Commander of the Strategic Missile Forces Igor Fazletdinov and retired colonel Vladimir Lumpov in the journal of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation “Military Thought”.

The authors of the article argue that the US military-political course towards the Russian Federation is becoming more and more aggressive due to the loss of Washington’s leading positions in the world. Moreover, the United States plans to defeat the Russian Federation in the form of a “Strategic (global) multi-sphere operation”, the ultimate goal of which will be the destruction of Russia’s deterrent nuclear potential. This goal is achievable in the event of an instantaneous nuclear strike against the nuclear forces of the Russian Federation or the deployment of missile defense systems around Russian borders.

“The main instrument of deterrence…may be the operation of the strategic deterrence forces (OSSS), which is under active development, the content of which can be operations of all components of the RF Armed Forces equipped with strategic offensive (nuclear and non-nuclear) weapons,” the article says.

The goals of such an operation are said to be repelling a potential nuclear strike by the enemy and preserving its own nuclear potential, suppressing the deployed US missile defense system, and causing “unacceptable” damage to the remaining nuclear weapons.

February 28 Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the law on the suspension of Russia’s participation in the Treaty on the Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (START, START-III). It followed from the document that the decision to resume the country’s participation in this treaty is made by the head of state. Putin announced the suspension of Russia’s participation in START on February 21 during his address to the Federal Assembly.

The press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, noted that Russia is not leaving START, this is a suspension. According to him, Russia’s goal is to make sure that nuclear parity is observed, taking into account the arsenals of France and Great Britain, which are not included in the perimeter of the agreement.

START III was concluded in 2010 for 10 years, it was extended for another five years in 2021 with the coming to power of the administration of US President Joe Biden. It is now the last arms control treaty between Russia and the United States in force. It provided for the reduction of strategic weapons to 700 deployed (and 800 in total) carriers (submarines, intercontinental missiles and heavy bombers) and 1,550 deployed warheads.
