The connection of the first power unit of the BelNPP in November 2020 made it possible to replace about 3 billion cubic meters of gas, reported Ministry of Energy of Belarus.
“Since the first power unit of the station was included in the unified energy system (November 3, 2020), more than 11 billion kWh have been generated. electricity, which made it possible to replace about 3 billion cubic meters of natural gas,” the report says.
The launch of the second power unit will increase production to 18.5 billion kWh per year. This is enough to meet about 40% of the country’s domestic electricity needs.
“The nuclear power plant…is not only a guarantor of Belarus’ energy security over the next decades, but also the country’s contribution to the common cause of mitigating the effects of climate change,” said the head of the department, Viktor Karankevich.
The Belarusian nuclear power plant with two VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2400 MW, located near the town of Ostrovets, Grodno region, is being built according to the Russian AES-2006 project. The first power unit was put into operation in June 2021. On February 2, 2021, the BelNPP generated the first billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.
