This year, the Kremlin will not take part in the Earth Hour event, since the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the organizer of the event, is included in the register of foreign agents by the Ministry of Justice. This was announced by the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov.
“This year we have decided to refrain from participating in this action,” he said.
When asked about the reasons for this decision, Peskov replied that this was due to the status of a foreign agent that the organization received. The Kremlin spokesman noted that “he has nothing to add on this topic.”
March 22 WWF informedthat it will not hold the annual Earth Hour event in Russia in 2023 “due to the requirements of the law.” The organization clarified that the event will be held symbolically online on March 25.
March 10 Ministry of Justice introduced WWF to the register of foreign agents. According to the department, the fund received support from foreign sources and, under the guise of protecting nature, “tried to influence the decisions of the executive and legislative authorities of the Russian Federation,” and also prevented the implementation of a number of industrial projects.
In addition to the organization, the Free Buryatia Foundation also made the list. In addition, a number of citizens have replenished the register, including economist Sergei Guriev, blogger Nika Vodvud (nixelpixel), former State Duma deputy Gennady Gudkov, ex-head ofYandex.News” Lev Gershenzon, journalist Daniil Gubarev.
