The Kremlin responded to criticism of Erdogan on the situation in Syria

Regarding the situation in Syria, there are “certain nuances” in relations between Moscow and Ankara, which, among other things, relate to the one whose obligations were not fulfilled under the memorandum agreed in Sochi. This was stated by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov, responding to criticism of Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“There are certain nuances in relations between Russia and Turkey – this is the state of affairs in Syria, and to the one whose obligations have not been fulfilled. These nuances and even disagreements have been repeatedly discussed by the two presidents,” Peskov said.
The Kremlin spokesman pointed to the friendly and partner nature of relations with Turkey, which allows “constructive discussion of these differences.”
According to Peskov, Moscow respects Ankara’s desire to ensure its security. At the same time, Russia calls on all countries to refrain from steps that could lead to destabilization of the situation in the world, he concluded.
The day before, November 21, Erdogan declaredthat Turkey conducted an air operation in Syria and Iraq because of the refusal of the Russian side to fulfill promises to withdraw Kurdish formations from the border of the republic. The Turkish leader referred to the Sochi agreement, concluded in 2019 between Moscow and Ankara, on joint actions to resolve the situation in the northeast of the Arab Republic.
On November 13, an explosion occurred on the pedestrian street Istiklal in the center of Istanbul. The Turkish authorities described the incident as a terrorist act, Ankara considers the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) responsible for the incident.
A week later, on November 20, Erdogan announced the launch of Operation Claw-Sword against the PKK in northern Syria and Iraq. The Turkish authorities called the prevention of terrorist attacks against the Turkish people and ensuring the security of the borders its goals.
