Moscow intends to take all possible measures to cancel the decision of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to suspend Russia’s membership, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
“Of course, we will look at what measures will be the most effective in this regard. And everything that can be done, and everything that needs to be done, even beyond that, will be done,” he said.
Peskov also recalled the words of President Vladimir Putin that protecting the interests of Paralympians and Olympians is a priority for the state.
IPC suspended membership of the Russian Paralympic Committee (RPC) November 16. 64 delegates voted in favor of suspending membership, 39 voted against, and 16 abstained. This decision is due to the alleged inability of the RPC to fulfill its membership obligations in accordance with the charter of the International Paralympic Committee, the IPC said. The RPC can file an appeal, if it is not satisfied, then it will be possible to restore membership in the organization no earlier than the next IPC General Assembly, which will be held in the fall of 2023.
On February 28, four days after the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, the International Olympic Committee recommended that international federations remove Russian and Belarusian athletes from competitions under their auspices. Most federations have followed this recommendation. At the moment, Russian athletes can compete under a neutral flag in individual tournaments in chess, MMA, tennis and judo.
