Russia is increasing the size of its Armed Forces because of the proxy war declared to it by the West, said the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.

“This is connected with the war that the countries of the collective West are waging. This is a proxy war, which includes elements of indirect participation in hostilities, and elements of economic war, financial war, legal war, going beyond the legal field, etc. Such measures are connected with this, ”he replied to the question is what is the reason for the increase in the size of the Russian army.

Peskov also recalled that the changes proposed by the Ministry of Defense in the Russian army were conceptually supported by President Vladimir Putin.

Earlier today, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, at a meeting on the increase in the size of the Armed Forces, said that large-scale changes in the Russian army, including an increase in its strength to 1.5 million people, will be implemented during 2023-2026

The minister also announced the formation of the Moscow and Leningrad military districts, an army corps in Karelia, the reformatting of seven motorized rifle brigades in the Western, Central, Eastern military districts and the Northern Fleet into motorized rifle divisions, as well as strengthening the combat component of the Navy, Aerospace Forces and Strategic Missile Forces. In addition, Shoigu called for paying special attention to the recruitment of contract soldiers, ensuring the timely supply of weapons, increasing the number of training grounds in military districts and new territories, etc.

On December 21, 2022, during an expanded meeting of the collegium of the Ministry of Defense, Shoigu said that the Russian Armed Forces should be increased to 1.5 million military personnel. In addition, among his proposals was also to gradually increase the draft age from 18 to 21 years, and the limit – from 27 to 30 years. Russian President Vladimir Putin supported these changes.
