The Kremlin does not consider the US-led “Summit for Democracy” to be a serious event

The summit “For Democracy” that began in the United States can hardly be classified as a serious event, Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, told reporters.

At the conference call, a Kremlin spokesman was asked to comment on Armenia’s participation in the event, and was also asked if the summit was aimed at confronting Russia and China.

According to Peskov, for the second time the United States decided to act as a “teacher”, gathering a number of countries under the guise of “pupils” at a “lesson on so-called democracy”.

“Well, those who wanted to take part in this lesson, this is their sovereign business. But here, in fact, many see that such attempts to divide the world into first-class and second-class countries are now perceived by many with smiles. And, of course, this can hardly be classified as some kind of serious event,” Peskov said.

On March 28, the second summit of heads of state “For Democracy” began in Washington. The purpose of the event is stated to “strengthen democracies” in the face of growing internal instability, corruption, inequality and the threat from “autocracies”, to which the United States ranks Russia and China. The number of participants compared to 2021, when the summit was held for the first time, has been increased from 111 to 121 countries (out of 193 UN member countries), including Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Mauritania, Mozambique and Tanzania.

Russia and China criticized the ongoing summit. According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, Washington is trying to legitimize American instruments of external control and interference in the internal affairs of other countries through such events. The Chinese Foreign Ministry, in turn, said that the United States ignores its own numerous shortcomings and provokes a split in the world, “defiling and trampling on the spirit of democracy.”
