The Kremlin did not confirm or deny the information about a possible meeting of the participants in the “grain deal” on May 3. This was stated by the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov.
“Well, I can’t tell you exactly about the level, about the place and about the time. Contacts continue, but so far they do not bring any results,” he said.
Peskov also recalled that Russia’s position in the negotiations on the extension of the grain deal is well known. “The deal has been extended by 2 months. Time shrinks like shagreen leather. The terms of the deal have not been fulfilled in the part that concerns the Russian agricultural sector. The dialogue will continue,” he added.
Earlier Reuters, citing a source in Kyiv informedthat negotiations between the participants in the “grain deal” may take place on May 3. Negotiations between Moscow, Kyiv and Ankara to extend the grain deal “in the coming days” on April 30 also announced Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar. According to him, they will be held at the level of ministers.
The grain deal was extended in mid-March until May 18. April 25 Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov saidthat the situation around the agreement reached an impasse. The minister pointed to the unwillingness to remove obstacles to the export of Russian fertilizers, despite their shortage, as well as to connect Rosselkhozbank to SWIFT. Also in the Kremlin called the prospects for extending the agreement are “not very good”.
The grain deal was concluded on July 22, 2022 by representatives of Turkey and the UN on the one hand, and representatives of Russia and Ukraine on the other. Separate agreements were signed with Moscow and Kiev: the first was for the export of Ukrainian grain from three ports, including Odessa, Yuzhny and Chernomorsk, the second was for assistance in the export of Russian grain and fertilizers. Moscow has repeatedly noted that the second part of the deal is not being implemented.
