The Kremlin appreciated Erdogan’s decision to approve Sweden’s entry into NATO

Turkey, as a member of NATO, has its obligations, and Moscow has never “worn rose-colored glasses” and understands everything perfectly. This was stated by presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the decision of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to approve Sweden’s entry into the alliance.

“Türkiye is committed to its obligations. It was never a secret to us, and in this regard, we never wore rose-colored glasses. That’s probably how we treat it. In this regard, we all perfectly understand. This is one part of the story. Another part of the story is our bilateral relations,” Peskov stressed.

Russia and Turkey have disagreements that the parties do not hide, says a spokesman for the Russian leader, but also have relations “which are absolutely in the interests of our two countries.”

At the same time, Peskov assesses the entry of Sweden into NATO negatively, Russia will take measures in connection with this event. “Negative, of course, the consequences are clear. The measures are, in fact, similar to those that are being designed, planned, in the context of the already completed accession of Finland,” Peskov said.

On the evening of July 10, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced following a trilateral closed meeting in Vilnius, which was attended by Turkish President Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, that Ankara agreed to ratify the protocol on the admission of Stockholm to the military bloc. According to Stoltenberg, Erdogan agreed to send the protocol on Sweden’s membership to the Turkish Grand National Assembly as soon as possible.

The secretary general of the alliance did not name the exact date when the Turkish parliament will ratify Sweden’s accession to NATO. CNN Türk, citing sources, said that the application could be approved during the autumn session. TRT Haber TV channel reported that Sweden promised Ankara not to support the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), Syrian Kurdish paramilitaries YPG/PYD and Feto preacher Fethullaz Gülen, recognized as terrorists in Turkey.
