The Japanese government resigned in its entirety on September 13. About it reports Kyodo agency.
This comes ahead of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s reshuffle. Later that day, the prime minister announced a new cabinet, replacing 11 of the 19 cabinet members and increasing the number of women ministers to five.
The post of Minister of Defense was taken by Minoru Kihara. He was previously the Prime Minister’s National Security Adviser. Former Justice Minister Yoko Kamikawa has become the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan.
Key positions in the Cabinet were retained by Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki, Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi, Digitalization Minister Taro Kono, and Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura. In addition to Kamikawa and Takaichi, Ayuko Kato (Minister for Low Fertility), Shinako Tsuchiya (Minister for Reconstruction) and Hanako Jimi (Minister for Regional Development) became female ministers.
Kyodo writes that the government reshuffle is taking place against the backdrop of a decline in the popularity of the Cabinet due to rising prices and lack of wage growth. At the same time, rumors persist that Kishida plans to dissolve the lower house, the agency notes.
