An explosive device was planted over the door of the establishment and went off when Zakharchenko and the people accompanying him entered the cafe. Together with Zakharchenko, his bodyguard died then, 12 more people were injured.

At that time, Zakharchenko was the head of the DPR for almost four years, he was elected to this position in November 2014. After the death of the ex-head of the DPR, Denis Pushilin became the head of the republic. In November 2018, he won the election of the head of the DPR, gaining more than 60% of the vote.
