Russia and Ukraine should conclude an agreement to ensure the safety of the Zaporizhzhya NPP (ZNPP), declared Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi in an interview with La Repubblica newspaper.

“The idea is to ask the Russians and Ukrainians if they agree that the nuclear power plant should not be attacked. And we’ll propose a simple agreement to protect the station. Despite the statements of Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky, I saw interest from both sides,” Grossi said.

He stressed that the complete demilitarization of the entire surrounding zone is a more complex and “ambitious” task, so it is only about protecting the ZNPP along the perimeter of its territory.

The day before, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the IAEA report on the situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant can be trusted, despite the fact that the nuclear agency is under pressure from the US and the EU. At the same time, he noted that there is no Russian military equipment on the territory of the ZNPP, which the IAEA proposes to remove. Equipment, including those operating as part of counter-battery combat, is located outside the station’s perimeter, Putin concluded.

On September 6, the IAEA published a report on the results of the mission to the ZNPP. The organization called for an end to attacks on the station and the establishment of a safe zone around it. At the same time, experts did not specify who was shelling the object. The report also says that several events have been recorded at the ZNPP since the spring that violate the principles of nuclear safety, and that members of the delegation themselves witnessed the shelling.

On September 1, the IAEA mission arrived at the ZNPP territory due to regular shelling of the station during August. Experts inspected the area, accompanied by representatives of the Russian “Rosatom” and employees of the nuclear power plant. The delegations also showed the sections of the facility that had suffered from shelling by the Ukrainian military. At present, there are two IAEA specialists as permanent observers at the NPP.
