The Hungarian Foreign Ministry named the conditions for approving Sweden’s admission to NATO

The Hungarian Parliament will ratify the agreement on Sweden’s accession to NATO after the restoration of respect in bilateral relations, said the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Peter Szijjártó. writes portal 24.hu.

Sweden simultaneously calls for the agreement to be accepted, but at the same time accuses the Hungarian parliament of violating the principle of democracy.

“He noted that the deputies received their mandate as a result of a democratic competition; many deputies from government parties received the support of the people four, five and even six times,” the portal writes.

Speaker of the National Assembly (Parliament) of Hungary Laszlo Kever September 18 stated, that he is not sure about the need to approve Sweden’s application to join NATO. Kever made this statement after an educational video was shown in Swedish schools, which criticized Hungarian policies.

Sweden applied for NATO membership after the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine in February 2022. Finland also applied at the same time, and in April officially became the 31st member of the military bloc. According to the organization’s charter, the consent of all its members is required for the admission of new states to NATO.

Turkey opposed Sweden’s entry, but later agreed to ratify the protocol on Stockholm’s admission to the alliance; the Turkish parliament may consider this issue in October.
