The Hungarian Foreign Ministry allowed the revision of EU sanctions against Russia due to cold weather

The European Union may revise its sanctions policy against Russia this fall. This opinion was expressed by the representative of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Tamas Menzer, on the air of the M1 TV channel.

“Sanctions provoked a shortage of energy and a significant jump in prices [в Европе]. <...> I’m in it [вопросе] I am not an optimist, but a review of the sanctions can be expected in the autumn,” the diplomat said (quote according to TASS).

According to him, more and more Europeans are facing the negative consequences of sanctions, the situation may worsen with the arrival of cold weather. “When the cold comes and the economy needs to be managed, reality knocks on the door of every country,” Mentzer said.

Earlier, Hungary has repeatedly stated about the “failure” of EU sanctions against Russia. For example, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó spokethat the conflict in Ukraine and restrictions on Russia have “catastrophically weakened” Europe. He also said that he would ask the EU to stop taking steps that lead to an escalation of the Ukrainian conflict.

Also about the ineffectiveness of sanctions declared Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. According to him, such a policy of the European countries did not help stop hostilities in Ukraine. At the same time, the restrictions have led to a dangerous situation that “could bring Europe to its knees.”

In September Szijjarto informed, who asked a question during a meeting of the heads of the energy departments of the EU countries in Brussels about the need to maintain sanctions pressure on Russia. He noted that his question remained unanswered.

After the start of the special operation in Ukraine, Western countries imposed sanctions against Russia, which also affected the energy sector. Against the backdrop of restrictions and reductions in gas supplies from Russia to Europe, energy prices have risen sharply. EU authorities have repeatedly recognized that Europe is in for a difficult winter. At the same time, they do not plan to lift the sanctions, explaining the problems that have arisen at the cost of Europe’s independence from Russia and its energy resources.
